The Hut Project: New Contemporaries will be a collection of video interviews with artists who exhibited in the annual New Contemporaries graduate competition between 1989 and 2006. The interviews that will comprise the archive will be conducted by graduating art students who are themselves eligible to apply for the New Contemporaries competition as well as invited artists and curators. The Hut Project are currently looking for students to collaborate on this project as interviewers.
We are asking all 478 artists who exhibited in New Contemporaries from 1989 through 2006 to take part in this project, by selecting from a list of their fellow participants every artist of whom they are unaware. We then aim to interview every artist who has been marked as 'unknown' by anyone, and will use these selections to index the resulting archive of interviews.
The Hut Project: New Contemporaries is being supported by Anthology Film Archives, New York; The British Library Sound Archive, London; Centre pour l'Image Contemporaine, Geneva; and LUX, London, each of whom will store and distribute the archive.
