My Boyfriend My Boyfriend Illustration masquerading as 'fine art' that can be sold as Christmas presents Not a question I had considered and can't answer No I think the idea behind open studios is to break down the boundries between artists and their audience and make engaging with + buying work more accessible to Joe Public. The idea being that if you've got the artist there to talk about the work it makes it easier to understand. My problems with this are, why should art be easy to understand? and i'm not sure whether having the artist talk about the piece of work makes its meaning clearer (unless its a work thats meant to be spoke about). Also artists studios are generally cold, dank cells, so opening them up perpetuates the romantic myth that artists are all tormented, alienated souls that need patronizing (in both senses of the word).
